Let's discuss vinyl record players, premium audio equipment, and more! I have an unabashed love for music. As a young man, my first audio system was constructed from information from the R.C.A. tube manual. I have a background in electronic and mechanical design (MAVTS and Ten State Tech Institute). In the 70s, I started designing the Merrill Products. In my small way, I have contributed to improving the art and science of bringing musical works to life. The products that I have designed and produced in the past are Merrill Heirloom turntable, A.R. modifications, Black Magic Speaker, Marauder Woofer, Panacea Tone Arm, Energy Absorption Plate, Elephant Feet, Stable Table and Merrill-Williams R.E.A.L. turntable. My latest endeavor is the PolyTable, which offers excellent performance at a price anyone can afford. This site lists my GEM Dandy vinyl record players, premium audio equipment, and other products. Good Listening, "TWO WILL DO"George
The Magic of Vinyl Records by George MerrillI have been involved in the audio business for 50 years. I have manufactured turntables for 44 years. The vinyl record stores and reproduces sound by using a trench (groove) that contains sonic information in the form of irregularities corresponding to the sound inlaid in the side wall of this trench (groove). The stylus (needle) traces the two undulating side walls and in a modern cartridge produces a corresponding voltage to be amplified. This is a very crude method of storing and retrieving sound. YES, BUT every time I listen to a record I am amazed and mesmerized. I can hear many musical instruments and vocals occurring at the same time. The space in front of me is filled with the orchestra. No movement of the stylus can be detected. I ask myself how can this be happening? How can all this information be in this tiny groove? I understand how digital works. But the vinyl record is still MAGIC to me. Long live the Record.
